Dimmers and sensors and timers, oh my!
- Dimmer switches are great for "mood lighting" - and they can help you save energy and extend bulb life. Some models combine a dimmer slide and an on/off switch, allowing you to set the light to the desired level once, instead of sliding it up and down every time.
- Motion sensors, primarily used for outdoor security lights, are also great indoors, especially in stairwells, closets and utility rooms. Instead of fumbling for a light switch while your hands are full with laundry or groceries, a motion-sensing light switch will automatically turn the light on for you.
- Occupancy sensors, used in many businesses, rely on body heat instead of motion. Motion sensors will turn off the light if no motion is detected; occupancy sensors will keep the lights on if the temperature in the room remains constant.
- Photocells react to changing outdoor light levels, making them perfect for lamp posts and other exterior lighting. When the sun goes down, the lights come on; when the sun comes up, the lights go off.
- Timers can help make your home look lived-in while you're away on vacation. You can find models with seven-day settings, allowing for different timings every day of the week.
