Do-It-Yourself Project: Window Weatherizing

Window westherizingIf you have drafty windows, installing inexpensive weatherizing materials can help cut cold air leaks – and lower your heating bills by up to 15 percent.

  • Time: 30 minutes
  • Cost: $10-$25, depending on the products you choose
  • Difficulty: Easy - you might need to practice with the caulking gun a few times first
  • Tools: Tubes of caulk, caulking gun, rope caulk, window film, scissors, utility knife, hair dryer, clean-up rags

Before you start

Purchase weatherizing supplies at your local home center or hardware store. The staff can help you choose the right type of caulk for your needs. One tube of caulk will be enough for two windows or one patio door.

Before you go, be sure to count and measure the windows you need to weatherize.

  • Step 1: Apply caulk around the outside of the window casing to seal cracks along the wall.
  • Step 2: Add rope caulk around all the movable parts of the window sashes.
  • Step 3: Adhere the double-sided tape from the window film kit around the entire window.
  • Step 4: Trim away the excess window film.
  • Step 5: Use a hair dryer to shrink and tighten the window film.

That's it - you're done!
