Water Softeners
You may have heard that reducing the hardness of your home’s water can help improve its quality. But did you know that water softeners can also help you save energy?
Hard water contains elevated levels of calcium, magnesium, manganese and iron. Due to the extreme heat inside your water heater, these minerals settle out of the water or precipitate.
Mineral deposits form in the bottom of your water heater, and directly on the heating element in electric models. Soon the heating element has to heat the mineral deposits, then the water. Energy consumption increases by up to 30 percent. Life of your water heater is also shortened.
A water softening unit costs about one cent worth of electricity per month to operate. Equipment can be rented for about $20 per month, or purchased for $900-1,200.
Softened water also requires less soap and shampoo to achieve the desired results. An additional savings!
