Choosing the Best Trees

When it comes to choosing the best trees for your home, there are dozens of decisions to make: size, shape, type of foliage, and color — just to name a few.

Fortunately, the professionals at your local tree nursery or garden center can help.

The nursery staff might ask these questions:

• Why is the tree being planted?
• How large do you want the tree to be at full maturity?
• What shape do you want?
• What are the sun and soil conditions in the planting area?
• How large is your home?
• Do you mind cleaning up seeds, blossoms or fruit?

After you've narrowed down your choices, it's time to pick out the actual tree. Look for one with a straight trunk and strong, symmetrical branches.

Check for signs of diseases or insects, and read the tag carefully to make sure you have the correct variety.
